Indian Epilepsy Association,  Friends of SVIMS

The Indian Epilepsy Association,Tirupati Branch, in association with the Department of Neurology at Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), has been organizing monthly camps for persons with epilepsy since February 1999. The SVIMS provides advanced health care to the people of Rayalaseema, a poor region of the state of Andhra Pradesh. These camps are currently serving a large number of patients (approximately 600 per camp), most of whom are very poor. All patients who attend the camps receive one month's supply of the medicines free, and testing is conducted at reduced rates at SVIMS. Since 2003, AmeriCares has supported the camp program by donating anti-convulsant drugs for free distribution to those attending the camps. The drugs provided through the Indian Epilepsy Association are helping many poor people with epilepsy to receive the prolonged treatment required to manage the disease and lead useful lives.

The Indian Epilepsy Association, Tirupati Branch is registered as a non - profit organization with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India under FCRA and is dedicated to assisting persons with epilepsy. Further the Association is also registered with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of Government of India under Indo – US Bilateral Agreement. AmeriCares also is registered under this Agreement.

Epilepsy is a common brain disorder that affects not only the individual, but also the family and the community. In India, there may be about 5-10 million people with epilepsy, accounting for almost one-fifth of the global figures. Unfortunately, in most developing countries poor people with epilepsy receive little or no treatment, most often due to limited health care resources and the social stigma associated with epilepsy.

St. Paul’s Trust

St. Paul’s Trust, promoted by the renowned leprologist/social worker Dr. K.I., is a health and developmental organization striving towards the advancement of the disadvantaged sections of society, including those infected and affected by diseases like leprosy, tuberculosis, malaria and HIV/AIDS. The trust’s vision is that of a leprosy/AIDS – free India, sought by helping the marginalized sections of society (anybody in difficult circumstances) and by maintaining the dignity of God’s creation though justice. St. Paul’s Trust works to improve the quality of life for its patients by fighting to reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with diseases such as leprosy or HIV/AIDS so that all can live as dignified citizens of India. To achieve that end, the organization aims to propagate the truth that the whole universe is one joint family (Vasudaiva Kutumbakam) and all human beings are brother and sisters.

St. Paul’s Trust is based in Samalkot, East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh, having commissioned its service activities in the year 1981.  Amongst a variety of socially uplifting initiatives, its health-related projects include an artificial limb centre, care and support for PLHA, leprosy control and rehabilitation.  The organization emphasizes healthcare to children via its Balsahayog project, The Health and Nutrition Project, The Leprosy Mission of India (working for physically / mentally challenged children) and the Children affected by HIV/AIDS & Orphans & Vulnerable Children (CAA) Project.  The Trust began its HIV/AIDS work in the year 1991 through its initiative called ACFI (AIDS Control Foundation of India).
