AmeriCares India has been supporting health services in Malawi for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria patients. The Malamulo Seventh Day Adventist Hospital has been receiving regular shipments of medicines and medical supplies since 2006, including medicines from the AmeriCares India warehouse in Mumbai. These much-needed products reach a significant population of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria patients.
The 300-bed teaching hospital is located in the small rural town of Makwasa. Fielding more than 80,000 patient visits a year free of charge, Malamulo serves as a primary point of referral for 120,000 residents in the surrounding districts of Thyolo and Chikwawa.
AmeriCares commitment to improving health care in Malawi dates back to 1996, when we began providing U.S.-based medical teams, who were collaborating with the University of Malawi, with medicine and supplies. AmeriCares partnership with the Malamulo Hospital began in 2003, when AmeriCares constructed a therapeutic feeding center for the hospital during a severe health and food crisis.
