AmeriCares began working in Cambodia in response to deadly floods that ravaged six provinces along the Mekong River in 1996, and has been sending regular shipments of essential medicines and hospitals supplies to the country ever since.
AmeriCares works with our partner HOPE worldwide, which runs the Sihanouk Hospital Center of HOPE (Sihanouk Hospital). The hospital plays a vital role in improving health outcomes and medical expertise in Cambodia and helps address health issues, including high rates of child and maternal mortality.
Through ongoing medical assistance, AmeriCares has been supporting free health services at Sihanouk Hospital since it opened in 1996. Sine opening, the Sihanouk Hospital has become the busiest adult hospital in the country and has provided more than 840,000 outpatient consultations for patients in the capital city of Phnom Pehn and its outlying areas.
In order to provide care at no cost to 72,000 patients a year, Sihanouk Hospital, a non-profit institution, relies on AmeriCares’ monthly shipments of medicine and hospital supplies to leverage limited financial resources, including medicines shipped from AmeriCares India’s warehouse in Mumbai.
