AmeriCares launched operations in India in 2006 with the establishment of an office in Mumbai and a warehouse in Bhiwandi.  The warehouse is licensed by the Indian Food and Drug Administration and maintains international standards for handling pharmaceuticals.  With on the ground staff, an increased supply of donated medicines, and a strategically located distribution hub, AmeriCares has expanded its work in-country and is better positioned to serve the surrounding regions of Asia and Africa.

AmeriCares has delivered more than $47 million worth of critical medicines and supplies to India to date – a figure that continues to grow significantly with the establishment of a local presence. In the past year, AmeriCares India donated products directly to 42 health care institutions in over 15 states. Through strong partnerships with local governmental and nongovernmental organizations AmeriCares supports clinics, schools, hospitals and rural health organizations and responds to emergencies wherever and whenever they occur.

AmeriCares partnerships with local health care providers range from NGOs serving rural communities to municipal school systems providing nutritional support.  Partners supported by AmeriCares are addressing a wide range of health care needs from primary health care, to acute illness, chronic disease, malnutrition and emergency response.

  • Students encompassed: 43,000 (8th, 9th and 10th standards)
  • Municipal Wards covered: 19 wards

The project objective is to reduce tobacco consumption and increase awareness among Indian adolescent and youth about the positive impact of good oral hygiene and good health. Practically, the program aims to promote healthy living and to prevent young people from ever developing a dependence on tobacco.  Basic education about oral hygiene, disease prevention and the effects of tobacco usage, coupled with powerful visuals incorporating statements by well known personalities with youth appeal will focus the message on the positive impact of good health habits.

Working with a preselected group of Municipal School Children, AmeriCares India Foundation will conduct workshops which teach good hygiene tooth brushing.  The program will allow time to practice these skills at school and will provide the students the products and educational materials they need to practice good hygiene at home.  The intention is to extend the educational message to interested family members.  The anti-tobacco message will be integrated seamlessly into the discussion on positive health, clean teeth and beautiful smiles. Videos using popular stars to convey the message will be an integral part of the program.

The intended outcome is improved general health due to better health habits, reduction in the transmission of infectious diseases due to increased hand washing, improved dental health due to better oral hygiene and reduced tobacco consumption as students refrain from smoking or voluntarily enter smoking cessation programs.  Additional outcomes include the development of educational materials that can be replicated for future programs, the establishment of a mobile tobacco cessation clinic available for use at the municipal schools, a fully trained team of educators throughout the municipal school district who can reinforce and repeat the lessons learned and the introduction of health education into homes that would otherwise not be reached.
